Afrikaap Radio is proud to announce a powerful cross-continental collaboration with Stephanie Wilson, an American Master’s student in Pan-African Studies. This festive season, together with Stephanie’s Heart Project, we will deliver Christmas cheer, dignity, and hope to more than 1,200 children across the Western Cape.
A Spark of Inspiration Becomes a Movement
What started as a heartfelt moment during a study visit earlier this year has grown into a movement rooted in compassion, ubuntu, and global solidarity.
Ms. Wilson was part of a delegation of professors, students, and lecturers from various U.S. universities who visited South Africa this July as part of an immersive study mission. Among dozens of organisations and communities introduced to the group, the children she met left an unshakable impression.
Deeply moved, she returned home to the United States and launched “Stephanie’s Heart Project – SA”, calling on her family, friends, and colleagues to help provide Christmas gifts for children, and for elderly individuals connected to the District Six Museum. What began as a simple family initiative quickly grew into a collective demonstration of generosity across continents.

A Collaboration Rooted in Community and Care
Under the guidance of Chantal Willie-Petersen, lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, and Dr. Sebastian Petersen, owner of Afrikaap Radio, the project will bring joy to children from:
- Simondium Primary School in Franschhoek
- Safe Cities in Elsies River
Many of these children have never received a Christmas present in their lives. This year, they will be surprised with over 1,000 gift parcels – thoughtfully prepared and beautifully wrapped by Afrikaap Radio presenters, Andtin and Partners, and the Lions Club volunteers.
Earlier this year, Simondium Primary’s learners were visited by the American delegation. That experience alone was emotional and inspiring. What they don’t know is that an even bigger surprise is coming this Christmas.
Beyond Christmas: A Gift of Dignity
Ms. Wilson’s commitment to South African children began even before she returned home: she personally donated funds to ensure that over 40 children received brand-new school shoes. This act reflects the heart of ubuntu – a reminder that kindness knows no borders.
A Heartfelt Thank You
As a nation and a community, we extend our gratitude to Ms. Stephanie Wilson and to every individual – across the USA and South Africa – who has contributed to this project. Your generosity brings not only joy, but also dignity, connection, and hope to communities that need it most.
This partnership is a powerful example of how international collaboration can uplift local communities and inspire future leaders, educators, and changemakers.
