Bloubergstrand, Cape Town – A groundbreaking partnership between Afrikaap Radio, Gemini Twins Films, Moja Multi Media, and Bridgetown Theatre Company has brought to life an inspiring initiative for aspiring actors, radio presenters, and writers. The inaugural three-day training camp, hosted at the Melkbos Oppiesee Cultural Centre, provided a transformative experience for 30 individuals eager to pursue careers in media and entertainment.
The brainchild of actor and radio presenter Sebastian Petersen, this initiative was born from a dream to create opportunities for those without the financial means or access to formal training. The camp equipped participants with hands-on experience in writing, acting, and radio broadcasting, culminating in the production of a five-minute short film.
For many attendees, it was their first time stepping into these creative spaces. Lanielle Hartzenberg, niece of renowned poet Diana Ferrus, expressed her excitement, stating, “I truly enjoyed myself, and this was a first for me.” Similarly, 63-year-old pastor Andrew May from Athlone reflected on his experience, saying, “I realized that I am not too old to learn more.”

Most of the attendees hail from communities such as Manenberg, Elsies River, Hanover Park, and Mitchell’s Plain, making this camp a beacon of opportunity for young talents in historically disadvantaged areas.
The overwhelming success of this initiative has paved the way for an expanded second edition of the TV and Radio Training Camp, set to take place in July. The 5 day camp will be epic – hands-on and outcomes-based. During the July camp, four short films will be produced; written, produced, acted, edited, and directed, ready for screening.
The upcoming camp will be limited to 40 delegates. Those interested in participating can contact Afrikaap Media at 069 245 9543 or email info@afrikaap.co.za for more details.
